Kristin Hannah’s ‘Home Front’ lands at No. 7 on book list

For the first time in her 23 years as a writer, Kristin Hannah cracks USA TODAY’s top 10 this week. Her new novel, Home Front, makes its debut at No. 7.Set in Washington State, the drama revolves around a female Army National Guard helicopter pilot. When Jolene is called up to serve in Iraq, her husband a Seattle defense attorney is left behind to care for their two young daughters.Hannah’s previous best was No. 13 for last year’s Night Road, about a devoted mother, three teens and a tragic car accident. (The paperback edition is now No. 62.) A former lawyer who has published 19 novels, Hannah, 51, divides her time between Washington State and Hawaii.
Robert Harris, whose new financial thriller The Fear Index cracks USA TODAY’s Top 150 at No. 99, is already working on the screenplay for the movie version. He also wrote the script for 2010′s The Ghost Writer, from his novel The Ghost.Harris was feted in New York on publication day last week at a party hosted by The Daily Beast/Newsweek editor-in-chef Tina Brown and her husband, Harold Evans. The British novelist tells USA TODAY that Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum) will direct the 20th Century Fox production. “No cast yet,” says Harris, adding that if all goes well, filming on The Fear Index will begin in about a year.In the fourth film based on Stephenie Meyer’s romantic fantasy novels, newlyweds Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) consummate their marriage, and werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) is none to happy. Bella’s difficult pregnancy and even more traumatic delivery of daughter Renesmee has dramatic consequences for everyone. Queen Elizabeth (Vanessa Redgrave) declares he will never receive credit for his work after he supports a failed rebellion against her.Willem Dafoe, Julia Roberts and Ryan Reynolds star in this drama about an apparently successful family. But when tragedy strikes just before a celebration, long-simmering tensions affecting three generations must be dealt with before any healing can begin.
